Since 2022, Kateryna Smagliy has served at the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA, where she covers a broad portfolio of political and public diplomacy issues. She joined the Political Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in 2021 and holds the diplomatic rank of a Counselor. She is a former Director of the Kennan Institute Kyiv Office, a Kyiv-based consultant of the European Endowment for Democracy in Brussels and director of the Anti-Crisis Humanitarian Program of the International Renaissance Foundation. She also worked for the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv as the principal liaison officer with Ukraine’s parliament. Parallel to her diplomatic career, Smagliy taught Leadership and International Relations at the displaced Donetsk National University named after Stus and the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy." She seeks to focus on formulating and driving policy reforms that respond to the concerns of internally displaced citizens and educational institutions in the Donbas.
